I started the University of London Bachelor of Laws through the Graduate Entry Stream in 2019 and was not initially successful in the programme. While I felt I had some understanding of the core concepts of law, I narrowly failed the October 2019 criminal law exam and did not score particularly well in contract law.
Initially, my approach was to apply the study techniques from my first undergraduate degree, focusing on completing the readings and activities and making a commitment to read the entire text outside of the assigned readings. I attempted to memorize a large amount of information and apply everything I knew to the question so I could show complete knowledge of the topic during the exams – this was the wrong method.
I failed to apply specific knowledge to questions and took a far too descriptive approach to the study of law that did not enable me to achieve high marks. After contacting UoL Law Tutors, I began working with my instructor who developed a plan so I could be successful in the May 2020 exams. Even under the challenging circumstances of COVID-19, I was able to achieve a second-upper classification, far above what I anticipated.
